Eyewitness in Brussels

The Brussels Street Photography Festival and the Jewish Museum of Belgium are promoting the photography contest Eyewitness in Brussels. Pictures can be submitted until Sunday, January 13, 2019, and the only condition is that they must have been shot in the city of Brussels (Brussels-Capital Region).

The theme of the contest Eyewitness in Brussels is related with the work of the American photographer Leonard Freed (b. 1929, d. 2006). Freed was born in Brooklyn in a working-class Jewish family from Eastern Europe. He started to take photographs in 1953, while visiting the Netherlands, and abandoned the idea of being a painter to become a well-known street photographer who would come to document many important events of the 20th century history.

To celebrate the works of Leonard Feed, who immortalised historical moments like the Yom Kippur War in 1973, a retrospective exhibition can be visited at the Jewish Museum from October 2018 until March 2019.

Brussels is the second-largest international city in the world and home of almost 200 different nationalities. This contest urges you to witness Brussels in all its aspects. To register not only the fancy centre with its old streets and buildings, but also locals that are usually out of the public sight. It urges you, as stated on the contest webpage, to show

Brussels through your eyes.

Selected pictures will be exhibited in the Jewish Museum of Belgium from February 21 to March 17, 2019.
